“Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not die, so do other creatures.”
—His Holiness The Dalai Lama
The children at HEP know that when Mrs. Kathy visits, they are in for a very special treat! Working through “Canines Helping Kids”, Mrs. Kathy’s visits aren’t complete without her friend, Marley! Visiting once each week, Mrs. Kathy and Marley participate with the children on a wide range of activities, including having the children take turns reading to Marley during homework time. Studies have shown that by reading to a pet, such as a dog or cat, children are able to relax as threats of being judged are eliminated. This allows children to practice reading skills, helping to build self-esteem and focus on reading rather than on outside interferences.
